Frequently Asked Questions (Faqs) About Domain Name Transfer

What is a domain name transfer?

A domain name transfer moves a domain’s registration from one registrar (the company managing the domain) to another. This changes who pays for the domain renewal and manages the domain’s settings.

How do I prepare my domain for transfer?

You need to:

  • Unlock the domain at your current registrar.
  • Get an authorization code (also called an EPP code, transfer key, or domain secret key) from your current registrar.
  • Verify that your contact information for the domain is accurate.

How long does a domain transfer take?

Domain transfers typically take 7 to 10 days to complete.

Can I transfer a domain that was recently registered or transferred?

No, domains are not eligible for transfer if they are within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer.

How do I initiate a domain transfer?

After preparing your domain, please enter the domain name and authorization code on our website, select privacy options, and complete the checkout process.

How do I check the status of my domain transfer?

Log in to your Domain Control Panel, go to the “Transfers” section, and select either “Transfers In” or “Transfers Out,” depending on the direction of the transfer.

What if I see the error "Domain locked"?

This means your domain is still locked at your current registrar. It would be best if you unlocked it before initiating the transfer again.

What if I see the error "Invalid authorization code"?

Please double-check the authorization code you entered. If it’s still invalid, you can get a new one from your current registrar.

What if I see the error "Transfer rejected"?

Your current registrar has rejected the transfer. Contact them to resolve any outstanding issues, and then restart the transfer with us.

What does it mean if the transfer status is "No action required: Initializing status"?

This usually means we’re processing your transfer, and you don’t need to do anything. However, if it remains in this state for more than seven days, your domain might be ineligible for transfer (due to being too new or recently transferred).

What if I didn't receive the authorization code?

Please check to make sure your administrative email address is correct with your current registrar. If it is, contact them to retrieve the authorization code.

What happens to my website during a domain transfer?

In most cases, your website should remain accessible during the transfer. However, your DNS changes might only take effect once the transfer is complete.

Will my email continue to work during the transfer?

If your email is hosted with your domain registrar, it may be temporarily interrupted during the transfer. If your email is hosted elsewhere, it should continue working.

Will my domain privacy settings transfer?

Domain privacy settings might not transfer automatically. You may need to re-enable them with the new registrar.

What happens to my remaining registration time after a transfer?

Usually, the remaining registration time is added to your new registration period with the new registrar.

Is there a cost associated with domain transfers?

Yes, there is typically a fee for each domain transferred.

Can I transfer multiple domains with different extensions (e.g., .com, .net)?

You can transfer domains with different extensions in a single bulk transfer.

Will my SSL certificate transfer to the domain?

SSL certificates are not automatically transferred. You may need to reissue or transfer the certificate separately.

Can I transfer a domain with active DNSSEC records?

Yes, you can transfer domains with DNSSEC, but you might need to update DNSSEC keys with the new registrar.

What should I do after a domain transfer is completed?

After the transfer:

  • Verify your DNS settings.
  • Re-enable domain privacy (if desired).
  • Confirm that your website and email are functioning properly.
